“This is kind of my thing. I don’t get my hair done. I don’t go for designer purses or jeans. I don’t ski. I’m not super into cars or traveling or clothes or jewelry. Everyone has their one thing they spend too much money on, and apparently being a back-of-the-pack racer is mine.”

And it’s not a terrible thing in the least. (She has an AWESOME racing year lined up and I can’t wait to follow it.)
I didn’t bulk buy admissions, but I did register for a big race — in Euro, which helps with the denial of how much it actually costs. Super Dollars are fake, after all. And I can further justify it by the fact that the two races I did in 2011 were FUH-REE. (MWR rocks.)
When I started racing, 5ks were about $30, 10ks were $40, and longer were maaybe $65. Before I left SF, I started skipping races I’d done for years because $45 for a 5k seemed nuts — especially since at the time, it didn’t seem to have an associated charity.
I get it, there are Porta-Potties and aid stations needed, but maybe instead of a flat tax, we can have someone run for President of Amateur Racing and set standard limits. “Three bucks per k and your t-shirt better be cute.”
